Macrolane: Why is it banned in the breast?

AFSSAPS decision of August 26, 2011: Ban on "MACROLANE" injectable devices for breast augmentation

What are the reasons for this?

  • Because the use of an injectable in breast augmentation implies a repeated invasive procedure likely to cause inflammation.
  • This is due to the formation of nodules, the consequence of product fragmentation, and capsular contractures.
  • Because disturbances in palpation and interpretation of imaging studies can lead to delayed detection. Crawford R, Shrotria S. Macrolane injections for breast enhancement in undiagnosed breast malignancy: a case report. J Plast Reconstr Aesthet Surg; 2011.
  • Because early detection and diagnosis of breast cancer is a public health priority.

The ban on injecting Macrolane into the breasts is therefore linked to the problem of radiological monitoring of injected patients for breast cancer.

Injecting Macrolane remains an authorized option for buttock augmentation or for any other part of the body (except the face).
