Surgery a success

Dr. David's operation (double "graft" reimplantation of the arm and hand) was a success. This is an exceptional success, as this type of microsurgical reimplantation has never been performed before. We now know that it is possible to reattach an arm that has had a double-staged amputation, and that every effort must be made to reimplant the amputated arm microsurgically 1. Microsurgery enables muscles, nerves, arteries and veins to be repaired with wires, using a microscope.

The next step is to begin rehabilitation once the post-operative phase is over. This re-education will be long, averaging 18 months, but is essential if the patient is to regain the best possible function. Today, we are optimistic about the results of this surgery and the progress of the rehabilitation.
